Tata Punch EV review
The Tata Punch EV is a newly launched electric vehicle by Tata Motors. Here's a quick look at its specifications: Prices for the Punch EV range from ₹11 lakh to ₹15.5 lakh. The vehicle offers two powertrains: a medium-range 25 kWh battery with a claimed range of 315 km, paired with an 82 horsepower motor, and a long-range version with a larger 35 kWh battery that boasts a claimed range of 421 km and comes with a powerful 122 horsepower motor. Tata Motors claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of 9.5 seconds, which is quite respectable. There are also three driving modes—Eco, City, and Sport—that allow you to adjust the powertrain characteristics. Today, we'll be reviewing the 122-horsepower version.
When I drove the petrol Punch, I liked many aspects of the car, but one drawback was its lack of power. This new version addresses that issue. Accelerate, and you'll notice the strong, linear pace that feels rapid. Since there's no gearbox, the ride is smooth, and coming to a stop is seamless.
One standout feature of the 122-horsepower version is the adjustable regeneration, with four levels available—three levels of regeneration and one with no regeneration. You can adjust these settings using the paddles.
The suspension is well-tuned to absorb bumps and potholes smoothly, even on bad or uneven roads. Tata Motors attributes this comfort to the EV's stiffer body shell and higher torsional rigidity, which allows for softer damping.
Tata also set up a small off-road track to demonstrate the Punch EV's off-road capabilities. Although it isn't a 4x4, its ground clearance of 190 mm and 50 mm water wading depth exceed that of the Suzuki Jimny. The vehicle also includes hill hold and hill descent control for added stability on loose terrain.
In summary, I like the Tata Punch EV. The electric switch has significantly improved the vehicle's performance, and the adjustable regeneration and suspension make for a comfortable and capable ride.
